As we celebrate the month of July, a special time for me and many others, we embark on a new series honoring the remarkable lives of saints whose feast days fall within this summer month. We begin with a truly extraordinary soul whose story resonates with profound lessons for our modern world: **Saint Maria Goretti**. Celebrated on **July 6th**, her short life was a powerful testament to purity, incredible courage, and ultimately, the transformative power of forgiveness. 🕯️

A Humble Life, A Heroic Stand

Maria Goretti was born in 1890 into a poor farming family in Corinaldo, Italy. The eldest daughter of her family, she was a simple, cheerful child, known for her deep piety and willingness to help. At a young age, her family moved to live and work on a farm in Nettuno, a coastal town near Rome, enduring hardship and poverty after her father's untimely death. Maria, just 11 years old, took on the responsibilities of caring for her younger siblings and helping with household chores while her mother and older brothers worked in the fields.

On July 5, 1902, a tragic event unfolded that would seal Maria's path to sainthood. Alessandro Serenelli, a 20-year-old neighbor and sharecropper from the same household, made immoral advances toward Maria. Despite his threats, Maria fiercely resisted, proclaiming, "No! It is a sin! God does not want it!" In a fit of rage, Alessandro stabbed her multiple times with an awl.

The Power of Forgiveness

Maria Goretti was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her wounds the following day, July 6, 1902. Before she died, as she lay suffering, her last words were a profound act of grace. When asked if she forgave her attacker, she bravely stated, **"Yes, for the love of Jesus I forgive him... I want him to be with me in paradise."**

This act of forgiveness was not in vain. Alessandro Serenelli was sentenced to 30 years in prison. During his incarceration, he experienced a profound conversion after having a dream in which Maria appeared to him, offering him lilies. Upon his release, he sought out Maria's mother, Assunta, and begged for her forgiveness, which she generously granted, famously saying, "If God has forgiven you, I can forgive you too." Alessandro spent the rest of his life as a lay brother in a Capuchin monastery, living a life of penance and devotion, and was present at Maria Goretti's canonization.

A Legacy for Our Times

Saint Maria Goretti was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1950, becoming the youngest saint in the Church's history at that time. Her story stands as a powerful reminder of enduring virtues that are just as relevant today:

  • Courage: Maria's unwavering resolve in the face of danger, choosing purity over compliance, serves as a testament to profound moral bravery.
  • Purity: She exemplifies a steadfast commitment to innocence and the sacredness of human dignity, even unto death.
  • Forgiveness: Perhaps most strikingly, her ability to forgive her aggressor, and her mother's subsequent forgiveness, showcases the immense healing and transformative power of mercy. It teaches us that true freedom comes not from holding onto anger, but from releasing it.

Saint Maria Goretti's life challenges us to consider what we stand for, how we respond to adversity, and the incredible strength found in a forgiving heart. Her feast day on July 6th is an invitation to reflect on these virtues and allow her inspiring example to illuminate our own paths.
